Dolly Parton songs. Hmmm, not looking forward to this. Not because I have anything against Dolly Parton, but I don’t think these guys should be asked to sing from her songbook. It’s not really that good of a library in which people can show off their singing skills. This has to do with the type of singer Dolly Parton is, and what songs she has chosen to sing and to write. They work great - if you’re Dolly Parton with your high-pitched, thinned-out, less than soulful voice. So maybe I do have something against her…  

If you’re going to pick a female country artist, pick and artist that has a varied sounding book, so you can choose between that Dollyesque twangy stuff or more contemporary fare. Reba and Shania come to mind.

Brooke White - Brooke White + Dolly songbook = underwhelming.

David Cook - David did what I think needs to be done with this songbook: rearrange it. I’m warming up to this guy. Did the most he could with a Dolly song. This is going to be a long night … for everyone.

Ramiele Malubay - Ramiele’s usual not-ready-for-prime-time performance + Dolly songbook = A big, fat yawn.

Jason Castro - I actually liked Jason’s performance. Like David, he made the most of the song. He did a good job with it, but he was handicapped by, yeah, a Dolly song.

Carly Smithson - You know if Carly lost about 10 - 12 pounds, she’d be smokin’. ANYway… I’ve always hated this song (”Here You Come Again”), but for the first time, ever, it sounded good to me. Thank you for slowing it down. Smart, smart, choice. The best performance so far. Simon is right about what Carly/her stylist is choosing for her to wear. He wouldn’t go there, but it’s her weight. They’re picking stuff that she should be wearing 15 pounds down the road. The wardrobe choices have been most unflattering.

David Archuleta - It’s funny. The guys are having the most success tonight with Dolly’s songs. I could care less about this stupid song…David did well despite having to sing that piddle.

Kristy Lee Cook - I love looking at Assless. She looked especially tasty tonight in that dress. Real nice. Uh, the singing? KLC was singing at the county fair. The thing is, this is her type of song and she’ll stay for another week. I think she wants to bang Simon.

Syesha Mercado - It’s no surprise that Whitney had a bigger hit with the song than Dolly did. Syesha sang it better than Dolly ever did. I love the way she held that note. She was pushing a little though, but she pulled it off. Another performance I thought I should’ve been seeing from her all along. STILL not the best she can do.

Michael Johns - I thought this was a nice showcase for Michael. I think this was his best performance to date, even though I’m not a fan of the song. He made it his, and he owned it big time.
